NPM 2012 #11: Old Korean Red Pepper Paste

I have this Korean red pepper paste
sitting in my humming fridge
that I’ve had since oh,
I don’t know when
I imagine it would be timeless
and I can eat from the same tub
when I’m 50 years old.

But when I look at the expiration date
it looks back at me with exasperation:
“October 25th, 2011”.


Do I eat it?
Should I?
And if I do,
will I turn into the dreaded kimchi monster?
The box and I stare at each other for a while.

I decide to still eat it.
It still tasted great.
I still seem to be alive
and not dying on the toilet.

All is right in the world.

I think.
